In 1905, the side bell tower was removed from the 1971 Courthouse and a large dome over the main body and side extension were added. The result of these modifications created a Courthouse with a markedly different but pleasing appearance and is considered a new courthouse.
There were two large cannons and cannon balls guarding the East entrance to the Courthouse. These were confiscated as raw metal during WWII. A Civil War field artillery piece remains. There was also a police booth on a corner of the square.
