The World War II Letters of Maxwell P. Smith
Maxwell Paul Smith was an Army Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was an enlisted man in Europe and an officer in Korea—he preferred being an officer. The letters digitized here are from his World War II era. Maxwell was born in Elyria, Ohio in 1924. He was raised in Quincy, Ill. along the Mississippi River. He and his sister, Betty, resided with their mother, Hilma and her Swedish immigrant parents. Max was a football player in high school and at Valparaiso University where he also played tennis. Max and his wife, Vaun, were married on June 5, 1949. Max practiced law in Fort Wayne, Indiana for fifty years. His firm, M. P. Smith and Associates is currently owned by his son Mark. Max and Vaun dedicated their lives to their children and had lots of fun on family ski trips and vacations and at the family cottage on the shore of Lake Michigan in Pentwater.
