Sept. 8-18

Dear Chas.

I heard from you some time ago. The pictures were fine and I look at them often. I wish you could see me now in a barracks by candle light writing. I have just finished three, one to mama. As I told her I like my position at Division Hqrs. Detached service they call it. No hiking as we always move by truck. The English call trucks "lorries". There is one thing the U.S. boys stick to their own talk and methods. I'm glad I'm among them now. Everything is going smoothly day by day. I suppose some time we will be cutting up capers around. I seem like another fellow since I have been among the bunch I'm with now. Everything so agreeable and things go so smoothly. Have you heard the song "I'm going to murder the bugler." Well I am away from the bugler's and glad of it. How the boys did hate to get up to a bugle call. You are having your troubles it seems with sugar rations etc. One would almost think that the U.S was starving. Ha Ha. Well the Hun is running fast now. I hope this winter sees the finish of them. How good it will be to get back among you all again. Suet pudding and all. Um - Ive passed through a lot of towns since I've been here. Ive even seen Paris can you imagine it. It is some city. I'm getting to be some French financier. I'll be eligible to Vonderlips foreign exchange branch when I get back and when I'm a great big gun you can come and see me. Some dream eh. You see I can still dream and this life is healthy. You would be surprised at the things you can go thru and expose yourself to without feeling it at all. The air is fine as we are in the open quite a lot, that is compared to when I was in Montclair. I heard a speech the other night and its great to know the people back home are backing us to the limit. How can we fail to win? The YMCAs are doing fine over here we can get cookies and cigars quite often and the eats are pretty good. Remember me to everyone. Love to yourself and Emily and the folk at Home.

Cliff
