LCpl. Brian "Chaos" Kaess (Ret.), 1997

Brian Paul Kaess joined the U.S. Marines on Mar 24 1997 at age 29, taking his oath of enlistment at Chicago MEPS in Des Plaines, Illinois. He had already served about 2 1/2 years in the U.S. Army from 1985-1988. He shipped out to MCRD San Diego and was assigned to Mike Company. He graduated U.S. Marine Boot Camp on June 20, 1997. He then attended School of Infantry West at Camp Pendleton, California, and was assigned to Delta Company there. He graduated SOI West as a Mortarman on abt Sep 15 1997. He received orders for a one year tour in Cuba. He arrived at 'Gitmo' abt Oct 10 1997 and was assigned as an Infantryman to RSC-Leeward. He stayed there until January 1998, when he was reassigned as a 'radio operator' to S-3 (Operations) for the remainder of his tour. His radio operator duties saw him assigned to the Windward side of the base where he worked in the Marine Barracks Command Operations Center (COC). Brian injured his leg during his service and was given a Medical Discharge as a U.S. Disabled Veteran (10%). He left 'Gitmo' for Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, on abt Oct 9 1998. He stayed at Camp Lejeune until his Honorable Discharge on Halloween Oct 31, 1998.
