A Christmas Postcard "Christmas Greetings 1918- To one of my Sweetest Sisters -Cliff- addressed to Mrs. C. F. Buck

Jan 1, 1919

Dear Emily.

Your wonderful long letter rec'd today and was glad every one had escaped the flu and that you all had pleasant Thanksgiving. It surely was one too, for we surely ought to be thankful peace is here at last.

Day before yesterday my chum Ralph and I both rec'd our Xmas packages from home. They were properly enjoyed and the only part remaining is the uneatable part like razors shaving brushes, etc. The candy tasted fine and everything was appreciated. Did I write in any of my previous letters that Ralph and I were working on our small electric light plant. We light our own billets and officers quarters. Our shifts are 4 hours on and 12 off which is very easy. We have no other duties except the ones connected with the light station which is a nice large warm room.

The weather over here is surely warmer than at Succasunna. Rain comes nearly every day and the climate is very damp, but by raiding near by wood piles we keep warm. We have enormous fire places in our billets and bed ticks and plenty of blankets for sleeping.

Ralph and I spend quite a few hours each day talking over "when we get back." It seems to me it wont be much before Feb. at the earliest that we sail. If we do at that time I will be perfectly satisfied. We will then have a delightful spring and summer before us.

You must have had a great time at your dinner given to the bank boys and girls. I wish I could have attended for I cant forget certain hot rolls, etc., and by the way I suspect certain sugared dates in my Xmas package came from you. Yum, Yum!

This last week we have had some great times among ourselves. Making up a fellows bunk with logs for a mattress was a huge success. Ralph won a mandolin at a Raffle and I am trying to learn how to play it.

The war certainly seems as if it had happened years ago. No one takes much interest in it any more except to hope the peace terms will be severe as possible to repair the inhumane and terrible things we have seen. The Hun is as bad and worse than you see pictured in the magazines and what you read about. It seems impossible a civilized race could act so dastardly. However they are paying for it now thanks to the U.S.A.

Well Emily I will close hoping you and Chas have spend a Merry Xmas & New Years. Tell the folks I am asking for them and ...love to you all. I recd a letter ...Uncle Milt the other day.

Cliff
