Stephens, Hugh A., 36th Indiana Infantry

Hugh Andrew Stephens was born 30 April 1833 in Ohio. He married Artimesia Saxon, daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Wantland/Wantling) Saxon, 2 June 1859 in Delaware County, Indiana. Hugh and Artimesia lived in Mount Pleasant Township, Delaware County, in 1860. Hugh served as a sergeant and then a captain in Company B, 36th Indiana Infantry, during the Civil War. Hugh and Artimesia lived in Muncie, Delaware County, in 1870, and in Owen Township, Clinton County, Indiana, in 1880. Following the war, Hugh applied for a county bonus for discharged soldiers. A digital image of his application is online at Ball State University's Digital Media Repository. Hugh died 25 April 1893 and was buried in Green Park Cemetery, Portland, Jay County, Indiana.
