Note: John Shaffer was born in 10 June 1755 in Berks County, Pa
(according to his Rev War Records ) and moved to the Shenandoah
while a small boy. He married Eve Kelknar in 1778, a neighbor of
the family. They lived and owned property in various counties
including Wythe and Washington counties in Virginia. He served
as a private in the Revolutionary War and was drafted in 1780 in
Shenandoah County, Virginia. He served a total of ten months
under the command of Capt. Jacob Benewit, Capt Lawrence Snapp,
Capt. Joseph Hawkins and Capt. All whose company joined the army
near Williamsburg and with his army went to Yorktown. After
becoming dangerously ill at Yorktown he was discharged shortly
before the surrender of Cornwallis in 1781. John was a German
Lutheran and active in church affairs. He was connected with
three churches, St. John's, St. Paul's and Kimberling in Wythe
County, Va. John was considered well off in his day. He was a
large landowner, being in possession of hundreds of acres of
land. They moved to Washington County, Va around 1795 where he
built his church known as Shaver's or Zion Lutheran Church in
1811. After Eve died in the spring of 1830, John gave or sold to
each of his six sons a farm. John was the only one who wrote his
name in Deutsch German script. He took turns living with his
sons George and Samuel. According to court records in Washington
County, George treated his father very badly and took all of
John's money and property. In 1851, Samuel took his brother
George to court regarding his father's estate. In 1853, Samuel
applied to the War Department to receive money due him on his
father's service during the Rev War. John spent the last years
of his life in the home of his son Samuel. John died in 1847 of
the 'Gravill' and was buried in the church yard of the Zion
Lutheran Church in Sullivan County, Tenn. His grave is marked
with a tombstone erected by the DAR in the 1940's. It reads
"John Shaffer-Tennessee-PVT-Benewits Va Co.-Rev War-April 27,
1847"
