South Side High School opened on 11 September 1922, and the first yearbook, the Totem, was published in 1923. Reflecting the yearbooks of Fort Wayne Central's Cauldron and Central Catholic's Echo, both of which included poetry and essays, South Side's first annual also had sections on social events, athletic activities, individual photographs of the faculty, school superintendent and board, and members of the senior class. Highlighted organizations, such as the Art Club, the Junior Hi-Y Club, and the Philalethians had separate sections with individual photos of each member, and group photos of underclassmen. Two years later, in the 1925 Totem, all students had individual photos in separate class sections. The Totem represents the longest continuously published yearbook for an existing Fort Wayne high school, detailing distinguished alumni and strong boosters.
